My Country Blog Hop : New Zealand

Hi Everyone,

Today I'm taking part in the My Country Blog Hop over at NanMade
I wanted to make something to represent my adoptive country of New Zealand. I've lived here for nearly 12 years now, and this is my home.

I have had this little dolphin pendant for ages, I think I got at a Flea Market on a hot summers day in Durban, South Africa and I've kept it all these years. I love the colours in the resin and that it glows in the dark at night!

The colours I chose closely represent the beautiful, blues and greens of Paua shell.

You can read more about New Zealand Paua here.

The dolphin pendant represents the Maui's dolphin. Maui's dolphin are only found off the west coast of New Zealand's North Island.  They are very endangered and are currently in the news here, as the government has decided to open up part of the West Coast North Island Marine Mammal Sanctuary - the main habitat of the Maui's dolphin - for oil drilling. You can find more information about these dolphins here

I love suncatchers, and I'm going to hang this wee creation up where I can appreciate the colours and be reminded of my beautiful country.

Be sure to pop on over to NanMade now, check out the talent and read stories from around the world.

Take care,
xxx

  1. You picked so perfect colors, so matching with the cute dolphin. New Zealand is the second land that I want to visit after Alaska =) I am so happy to know about the dolphin species (cause I never heard before) and so sad to know about the news about their habitat. It seem that everywhere is going to drill for this black gold *huuhhh*

  4. Beautiful design choice for the little dolphin. I work in the marine conservation field and have been peripherally following the story about the sanctuary. Keeping my fingers crossed for the dolphins.

  7. Beautiful suncatcher . It brought a smile to my face after I was very close to crying reading about the plight of the Maui's dolphins. I can't believe there are only 55 of these beautiful creatures left!! How did we let that happen? Thank you for sharing and creating that suncatcher with all the lovely colours.

  8. I love suncatchers and combine local sea-side finds into them. I have lived in Christchurch, many, many years ago and toured a fair amount whilst there. I do love NZ. I have lived on Vancouver Island, west coast of Canada for many years now. Your creation is gorgeous!!!!-patricia@savage.ca

  9. love blue and green together. It's my go-to summer colour combo. in fact i'm wearing it now.
sun catchers are jewellery for windows. and you can make them bigger than any earrings we can comfortably wear.
thanks for sharing the plight of your dolphins, we should and must do more to protect all of earths' creatures.

  10. Paua shell is beautiful! Great idea to catch the sun in beads with blue-green sea colors - I can imagine how they sparkle! Sad news about the dolphins - we can not afford losing bits of nature in our times because we don't give it a chance to recover :(
