Pinterest Inspired Box Shelf

Hello Everyone,

I'm so sorry I've been quiet lately, hopefully when Gabe is better and schools are back from break, I'll be back to posting more regularly....

Today I wanted to share this sweet little craft I recently completed.

Remember last month I set myself a Pinterest craft challenge?

I adore these box shelves and since I had a wooden box that was doing nothing but looking ugly, I decided to give it a makeover....

First, I painted a coat of charcoal grey on the outer sides. When dry I rubbed wax from a candle along the edges, and painted 2 coats of white over the grey. 

When the paint is completely dry, scrape the edges with a blunt knife or your fingernail and the paint will peel off easily where the wax is.

I modged a sheet of scrapbook paper into the back of the box. 

It has such a sweet poem written on it...

Old things are more beautiful than many things brand new

Because they bring fond memories of things we used to do.

Old photographs in albums, love letters tied with lace

Recapture those old feelings that new ones cant replace

Baby shoes, a teddy bear, a ring that Grandma wore

Are treasures waiting there behind a door marked " Nevermore"

Old thing are more beautiful, more precious day by day

Because they are the flowers we planted yesterday

   I hung my new box shelf above the made over computer desk 

So, I need to make a few more, don't you think? 

I'm surprised how much i like this little shelf to be honest, and I love my painted jars displayed in it.

TV Cabinet Makeover - Fail and Save....

 Hi Everyone,

I'm so excited to share this project with you all....

Over the weekend - I decided that I would get onto the T.V cabinet in the kids room. Its a project that I have had on my list for ages. 

An awful before..... Eew please excuse the dust.....

 I sanded and primed....and Sean added feet..

 And at the same time Miss Maclayne played peeping Tom on the neighbours....Seriously!

 As the afternoons are cooler and darker - I had to finish the painting inside. The kids chose turquoise and I was happy to oblige as its my favourite colour..... clever kiddos...

  

This is where things began to FAIL dismally... I really wanted to try my homemade stenciling again. 

I cut out 8 flower shapes and taped them onto the two side panels (the nagging feeling started here)

   

I painted the panels white and when dry I gently peeled the "stickers" off..... 

Shudder.... oh! Not Good!

I thought I could save it by adding a pop of colour - so I painted a layer of yellow to each flower.....

By now it was 1.30 am and I was NOT HAPPY!!!!!! So I posted a status update on Facebook and threw myself into bed, hoping I would have some inspiration the next morning.....

Right... next day.... I sanded the panels back till they were smooth and started taping off segments - I was finally going to try the Ombre effect that everyone is doing.

Finally....I think I saved the poor cabinet!

Sean still liked the flowers - bless him for trying to make me feel better....

I'm so happy with the final look. Can't wait to set it up in the kids room.

Computer Desk Makeover

Hi Everyone

I did this desk project last weekend, but I've had all three kiddos sick this week so I havn't been able to post much.

I will admit that our computer desk and general corner of this room is an EYESORE!!!! 

Yes Hubby dear - your little corner of mess and mayhem that causes my OCD to act up something awful!!!!!!

Sean is an IT guy and has computer "bits" everywhere and if he has the space it will get even more out of hand - so a few years ago I made him downsize his corner and the result was a smaller area with much more chaos than even I could have anticipated.

The below picture is pretty cleaned up since I forgot to take a proper before picture

 

 Since I've started blogging this wee area is now kinda mine ... I think! 

This year (before broken leg) I've noticed Gabe really needs a place to sit and do his homework, and the dining table is always so full of toys and stuff that it just wasn't working for him.

Then I remembered the computer desk we had in storage at the back of a cupboard and decided to give it a makeover.....

I had 2 issues with this desk originally, firstly it was a computer junk collector and eyesore and secondly it was Ugly with a capital UG!!!!!! It is laminated particle board - need I say more!

 With the girls trying to help - I managed to prime....

I painted the base a dark grey blue (not exactly the same colour as before as Sean so excitedly pointed out - HA!)

 And the top? Of course White!!!!

I really wanted to stencil on the desk but the price of an alphabet stencil from Spotlight was a bit high and I wanted to use different fonts. 

So I printed the words out and made my own!

 

I cut my inspirational words out onto plastic and laid the homemade stencil onto the desk

 

Using the same colour paint as I used on the base, I gently dabbed the paint over the stencil.

Once dry I gave the whole thing a coat of satin varnish... 

I'm pretty impressed with my stencil and my words of motivation for Gabriel....

 And he had a spot to sit at and do some schoolwork this week

Like the recycle bin upside down in the middle of the garden?

I hope you like my desk makeover. So far its still tidy and Sean has a little cabinet under the desk for his junk stuff, so I'm happy!

Button Hair Ties

Hi Everyone,

A super quick easy - peasy post today. 

I have 2 out of 3 kiddos sick, so while DVD's are being watched I'm posting real quick....

Remember last month I set myself a little Pinterest Challenge? 

One of the crafts were these button hair ties....

I have to admit I struggled to find re-coverable buttons so luckily I had a few in my button box.

All you need for this 5 minute craft is, buttons, hair ties and fabric

 I had this cute piece of t-shirt that I saved from a baby top

Measure the fabric against the button and make sure you leave enough to tuck in the back.

Simply thread your hair tie through the back of the button and loop it so it is secure

Adorable right?

  

 

Payton just loves them and they look so cute in her messy hair...

Now I really need to find more buttons so I can make more. 

They are so easy and simple and a great pick me up for a plain hair tie.
